CA Passes Restrictions on Nonfunctional Turf for Commercial, Institutional and Industrial Customers

Collage of examples of nonfunctional turf lawn

Nonfunctional turf (NFT) refers to lawns that grow around sidewalks, in front of businesses or other areas between the street and building entrances.

In a nutshell, California Law AB1572 prohibits the use of drinking water to irrigate NFT lawns which don’t serve a recreational or community purpose (i.e. a park or golf course).

Currently, many commercial, industrial, and institutional properties (including common areas managed by homeowner associations) have grass or a lawn that is no longer allowed per state law. For examples of what qualifies as NFT as well as additional resources, please head here.
