When we determine the diameter of a service line, we prioritize our customer's safety and satisfaction. We determine the size of a service pipe by the number and types of water fixtures in a residence or business. Each type of water fixture, such as a faucet, toilet, shower, washing machine, dishwasher, etc. has water flow requirements.

San Jose Water developed a computer program to calculate the required service size in accordance with the latest American Water Works Association standards. This calculation ensures there is adequate water pressure in your building or residence, and that the speed of the water flow to the building is within established tolerances.

Keeping the speed of water under control helps to minimize pipe corrosion, the chatter and noise from household water valves, and damage to water fixtures and appliances such as water heaters, clothes washers, and dishwashers.
