As required by the California Public Utilities Commission’s (CPUC) Water Action Plan, San Jose Water Company will be implementing a tiered rate structure on or about November 19, 2008. One of the key goals of the CPUC’s Water Action Plan is to achieve water conservation through the elimination of a uniform block rate for residential customers.
Tiered or increasing “block” rates have been shown to provide an incentive for customers to use water more efficiently and thereby lower the overall water consumption. Generally, with tiered rates the average customer may experience a higher water bill during the summer and lower water bills during the winter since the per unit cost of water will increase with higher usage. San Jose Water Company is therefore encouraging customers to take steps to use water more efficiently to minimize any impact of the new rate structure.
Over the next few months, San Jose Water Company will provide additional information on tiered rates. This information will also be posted on our website as well as published in the local English, Spanish, and Vietnamese newspapers.
